JUNE Natural Woman of the Month: Solange Knowles

June 2012

There has been a stir in the natural community because of a few twitter posts from this month’s Natural Woman. Nevertheless, her style and presence made her the perfect candidate for Natural Woman of the Month.  Solange Knowles is a singer/songwriter, actress, and model from Houston, Texas. Even though she is well-known in the natural community for her awesome hairstyles, she is highly regarded in the fashion community as well.  “In 2008, Knowles was named as ambassador for Giorgio Armani‘s younger diffusion line, Armani Jeans. Armani said Knowles epitomizes the style, which is a ‘vision of a young, independent, casual lifestyle with a strong and cool, fashion sensibility’ ” (Wikipedia). It was the little twitter incident that compelled me to give her the Natural Woman of the Month Award for JUNE 2012!

(Also her birthday was yesterday! HAPPY BELATED!)

Today’s question is in regards to the Twitter posts on Solange’s page. “Do you find what she said regarding her hair offensive or irresponsible in any way?” I personally don’t think there was anything wrong with the posts. Sure, it would be great if she actually WANTED to be an influence in the natural community. But whether she wants to talk about hair or not, she is still making an impact in the natural world, even if it’s not on purpose. The more celebrities and people of influence who wear their hair natural, the more black women in America will be sure to embrace their own natural beauty! And as I mentioned in previous posts, the media can make certain “physical attributes seem more desirable.” Well, we need people to do the same thing with natural hair. We need people to make it LOOK GOOD, to SELL IT! And with all of her photo shoots and stylish fashion, she rocks it well! By the way, for those of you who may not have read the twitter posts, I’ve put them below.

  1. I think the whole thing is ridiculous. I am so glad that black women are embracing their natural hair, but our newfound acceptance seems to have spawned a harsh side effct: the natural hair police. Suddenly, one’s hair has to be the “right” kind of kinky/coily now?? Come on, let people do what they want with their hair, celebs included.
But I agree with you- Solange is gonna be a natural hair role model/spokeswoman now, whether she likes it or not.

  2. I love the post! As an African American male I love the natural look of a woman. I believe a woman wears her hair to match who she is. What she feels! Her pics resemble the 70’s flair. The natural hair with the bold attire resemble fireworks in the night sky, boom pow. She hot!
